Health and Safety policy
Movers Swiss Cottage Health and Safety Policy
Movers Swiss Cottage is committed to providing a safe and healthy working environment for our employees, contractors, visitors and customers. This Health and Safety policy sets out the principles and procedures we follow to manage risks associated with removal services, including packing, loading, transporting and unloading household and commercial items.
We aim to prevent accidents, injuries and work-related ill health through careful planning, appropriate equipment, competent staff and continual improvement of our working practices.
Our Health and Safety Objectives
Our objectives are to protect the health, safety and welfare of everyone affected by our activities, to comply with relevant health and safety legislation and recognised industry guidance, and to foster a positive safety culture within our removal operations.
We set and review health and safety goals such as reducing manual handling injuries, preventing vehicle-related incidents, improving use of personal protective equipment, and maintaining a clean and organised working environment. These objectives are regularly monitored and updated as our services evolve.
Management Responsibilities
The management team at Movers Swiss Cottage has overall responsibility for effective health and safety management. This includes providing adequate resources, ensuring suitable risk assessments are carried out, setting clear procedures, and reviewing performance at regular intervals.
Management will communicate safety expectations, ensure that appropriate equipment is available and maintained, and promote safe systems of work across all moves. Where necessary, external competent advice may be sought to support compliance and continual improvement.
Employee Responsibilities
Every employee has a duty to take reasonable care of their own health and safety and that of others who may be affected by their actions or omissions. Staff must cooperate with all health and safety procedures, attend training as required, and use equipment correctly.
Employees are expected to report hazards, near misses, incidents and any defects in equipment or vehicles immediately to their supervisor or manager. No worker is expected to undertake a task for which they are not trained or which they believe cannot be carried out safely.
Risk Assessment and Safe Working Practices
We carry out risk assessments for our removal activities, including packing, lifting, carrying, loading, unloading and transport. These assessments help identify potential hazards such as manual handling risks, trips and falls, vehicle movements, working at height when using ramps or steps, and the handling of fragile or heavy items.
From these assessments we develop and implement safe working practices. These may include team lifting for heavy objects, the use of sack trucks, trolleys and moving equipment, careful route planning, control of access to loading areas, and the separation of pedestrians from vehicles whenever possible.
Manual Handling and Use of Equipment
Manual handling is a significant aspect of removal work. We provide training for our staff on correct lifting techniques, posture, and the safe movement of bulky items such as furniture, appliances and office equipment.
Where practical, we use mechanical aids including trolleys, lifting straps, piano dollies and ramps to reduce physical strain. Employees must use this equipment as trained, ensure it is in good condition before use, and report any damage immediately so that it can be repaired or replaced.
Vehicle Safety and Driving Standards
Our vehicles are inspected and maintained regularly to help ensure they are roadworthy and suitable for the loads they carry. Drivers are required to hold the appropriate licences and are trained in safe driving, load securing and the use of reversing aids where fitted.
Loads are distributed and secured to prevent movement during transit, reducing the risk of injury and damage to customers belongings. Drivers must follow road traffic laws, adhere to speed limits, and avoid driving when fatigued or unfit to do so. Parking and unloading are carried out with care to protect both staff and the public.
Customer and Public Safety
During removals, particular care is taken to safeguard customers, neighbours and the general public. We aim to keep access routes clear, mark or control entry to loading areas where possible, and minimise obstructions on pavements, stairways and shared corridors.
We encourage customers to keep children and pets away from loading zones and moving vehicles, and to follow any guidance given by our team on the day of the move. Our crews are trained to work tidily and to remove waste and packing materials from walkways as work progresses.
Training, Information and Supervision
Movers Swiss Cottage provides induction and ongoing training to staff relevant to their roles. This includes manual handling, safe use of equipment, vehicle safety, hazard awareness, and emergency procedures. Additional training is given when new equipment, vehicles or processes are introduced.
Supervisors and team leaders monitor working practices to ensure that methods remain safe and that training is being applied. Information on health and safety requirements is communicated through briefings, toolbox talks and written guidance available to employees.
Accident Reporting and Incident Investigation
All accidents, incidents and near misses must be reported as soon as reasonably practicable. We maintain records of such events and investigate them to understand underlying causes and identify improvements.
Where necessary, corrective actions may include changes to procedures, additional training, revision of risk assessments, or maintenance and replacement of equipment. Information from investigations is shared appropriately within the business to help prevent recurrence.
Welfare, Health and Wellbeing
We recognise the physical nature of removal work and its potential impact on staff wellbeing. Reasonable steps are taken to schedule work to reduce excessive fatigue, to plan adequate breaks, and to ensure suitable access to drinking water and washroom facilities during operations.
Employees are encouraged to raise any concerns about their health or fitness for particular tasks. When appropriate, work may be adjusted or alternative duties offered to protect the individual and others from risk.
Emergency Preparedness
Our teams are briefed on basic emergency procedures relevant to site conditions, such as fire precautions, safe evacuation and dealing with minor injuries. First aid provisions are available in vehicles or at operating locations, and staff know how to obtain further medical assistance when required.
When working in shared premises, our crews follow the host building emergency arrangements and cooperate fully with site managers and security staff.
Policy Review and Communication
This Health and Safety policy is reviewed periodically and whenever significant changes occur in legislation, our operations or the nature of the risks we manage. Any amendments are communicated to employees so that they are aware of current procedures and expectations.
The policy is made available to employees, contractors and customers on request. By working together and following the principles set out in this document, Movers Swiss Cottage aims to deliver reliable removal services while maintaining high standards of health and safety for everyone involved.
